Myripristis hexagona is a captivating medium-sized squirrelfish prized for its unique hexagonal markings and nocturnal behaviour. This species is best suited for marine aquarium enthusiasts with some experience, as it requires specific care to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Myripristis hexagona coexists well with other non-aggressive fish. It is a nocturnal species, often hiding during the day, so providing plenty of caves and crevices is essential. Avoid housing with overly aggressive tankmates to reduce stress.
Diet: This squirrelfish is carnivorous, feeding primarily on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night to match its natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and hiding spots. The aquarium should be mature with stable water parameters. Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow mimic its natural reef environment.
Reef Compatibility: Myripristis hexagona is considered reef safe with caution. It may prey on small invertebrates or fish fry, so careful consideration is needed when housing with delicate reef species.
Origin and Size: Native to Indo-Pacific reefs, this species reaches a maximum size of approximately 15 cm (medium variant).
