The Five-lined Cardinalfish (Cheilodipterus quinquelineatus) is a popular choice among marine aquarists due to its attractive appearance and manageable care requirements. Recognisable by its five bold black stripes running along a silvery body, this species adds dynamic movement and visual interest to a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Five-lined Cardinalfish coexists well with other non-aggressive fish species. It is best kept in groups to encourage natural schooling behaviour, which also helps reduce stress. Avoid housing with large predatory fish that may view it as prey.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality pellet or flake foods formulated for carnivorous marine fish.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain stable water parameters. The aquarium should be mature with plenty of live rock for shelter and hiding spots.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, and moderate water flow. Moderate lighting is sufficient as this species does not rely on intense light.
Reef Compatibility: The Five-lined Cardinalfish is reef safe with caution. It generally does not harm corals or invertebrates but may occasionally nip at very small or delicate invertebrates.
Available in various sizes, this species is suitable for both novice and experienced marine hobbyists seeking a peaceful, visually appealing addition to their community tank.
