The Tricolour Angelfish (Holacanthus tricolor) is a visually captivating species prized for its bold pattern and vibrant hues. This small angelfish is best suited for marine aquarists with some experience due to its specific care needs and territorial temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature tank environment.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish or similar-shaped species. It is recommended to keep only one per tank or provide ample space and hiding spots if housed with other fish.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and high-quality angelfish pellets to ensure optimal health and colour vibrancy.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and territories.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not strictly reef safe, it may nip at sessile invertebrates such as corals and clam mantles. Suitable for fish-only or fish-dominant mixed reef systems.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef conditions is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with caves and crevices for hiding and grazing. Position in a tank with stable water quality and minimal aggressive tankmates.
