Siganus vermiculatus, commonly called the Vermiculated Foxface, is a visually captivating rabbitfish species prized for its intricate vermiculated pattern and peaceful nature. This large specimen is well-suited for marine aquarists seeking a hardy, algae-grazing fish that coexists well in reef environments.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and shy, the Vermiculated Foxface is compatible with a wide range of community fish. It may display mild territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species but is not aggressive. It is reef safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality prepared foods such as spirulina flakes, nori sheets, and vegetable-based pellets to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its large adult size, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places to mimic its natural habitat.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential for optimal health.
Additional Care Notes: This species possesses venomous spines as a defence mechanism; handle with care during maintenance. It is best introduced to the aquarium last to reduce territorial disputes.
