The Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma veliferum) is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its distinctive sail-like dorsal fin and bold patterning. This medium-sized tang can grow up to 40 cm in length, making it a striking centerpiece for larger reef or fish-only marine tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Sailfin Tang requires stable water conditions and ample swimming space.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding spots.
Diet: Herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality herbivore flakes or pellets. Occasional meaty foods can be offered but should not dominate the diet.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and territorial nature.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, the Sailfin Tang may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or corals, especially if underfed.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate to strong water flow are suitable to mimic its natural habitat.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate its active nature.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (16 inches).
