Naso elegans, commonly known as the Elegant Unicornfish, is a visually stunning tang species prized for its elongated body, vibrant orange markings, and distinctive tail shape. This large marine fish is a captivating addition to mature reef or fish-only marine aquaria.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its size and specific dietary needs, this species is best suited to experienced hobbyists.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar tang species. It coexists well with other robust fish but avoid housing with overly aggressive or very timid species. Suitable for reef tanks with caution, as it may nip at certain corals or sessile invertebrates.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and specialised tang pellets. Supplement with occasional meaty foods such as mysis shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and adult size.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting is sufficient. Moderate to strong water flow is recommended to mimic natural reef currents and maintain fish health.
Placement: Provide ample open swimming space with live rock for grazing and shelter. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in length.
