Naso brachycentron, commonly referred to as the Banded Unicorn Tang, is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its unique banded appearance and graceful swimming behaviour. This medium-sized tang is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its specific care requirements and territorial nature.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Banded Unicorn Tang is generally semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics and similar tang species. It is recommended to keep only one individual per tank unless the aquarium is exceptionally large. Compatible with other robust fish species, it should not be housed with overly timid or slow-moving fish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, Naso brachycentron thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression. Stable water parameters with excellent filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain health.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient, mimicking natural reef environments. Moderate to strong water flow is preferred to replicate the tang’s natural habitat and promote active swimming.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Open swimming areas are essential to accommodate its active nature.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, Naso brachycentron may nip at soft corals or clam mantles, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approx. 16 inches) in length.
