The Sohal Tang (Acanthurus sohal) is a visually captivating surgeonfish native to the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean. Renowned for its vibrant blue and white horizontal stripes and sharp scalpel-like spines on the caudal peduncle, this species is a standout addition to large marine aquariums.
Care Level: This species is best suited for advanced hobbyists due to its territorial and aggressive nature, especially towards conspecifics and similar-shaped tangs.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Sohal Tang is highly territorial and can be aggressive, particularly in confined spaces. It is recommended to keep only one individual per tank unless the aquarium is exceptionally large (over 500 litres) with ample hiding spaces. It is generally compatible with other robust, non-aggressive fish species but may harass smaller or more passive tankmates.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, the Sohal Tang thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets (nori), spirulina, and specialised herbivore pellets. Occasional meaty foods like mysis shrimp can be offered but should not dominate the diet.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its active swimming behaviour and territoriality, a minimum tank size of 450 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate to strong water flow mimics its natural habitat and helps maintain fish health.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Open swimming areas are essential to accommodate its active nature.
Origin: Native to the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to approximately 40 cm in length.
