Acanthurus fowleri, commonly known as Fowler’s Surgeonfish, is a visually impressive tang prized for its vibrant colours and active swimming behaviour. This large marine fish is best suited to experienced hobbyists who can provide ample space and a carefully managed diet.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its size and specific dietary needs.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive, Fowler’s Surgeonfish can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar tang species. It is advisable to keep only one individual per tank unless the aquarium is very large.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality vegetable-based flakes or pellets and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 250 litres is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or soft corals, so monitor behaviour closely.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard moderate lighting and moderate to strong water flow mimic its natural reef environment.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots to reduce stress.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Approximately 30 cm (12 inches).
