Acanthurus bahianus, known as the Atlantic Surgeonfish, is a striking tang species native to the western Atlantic Ocean. This small variant is suitable for marine aquarists seeking an active and visually appealing fish with moderate care requirements.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but territorial towards conspecifics and similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample swimming space to reduce aggression. Compatible with a variety of community marine fish, including peaceful reef inhabitants.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, requiring a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality prepared foods such as spirulina flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty treats to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Minimum recommended tank size is 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming room and reduce territorial behaviour. Stable water parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 are ideal.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution; may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or coral polyps, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Care Level: Suitable for intermediate aquarists familiar with maintaining stable marine environments and providing appropriate diet.
