Hippocampus kuda, commonly known as the yellow or spotted seahorse, is a fascinating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. Our stock is tank-bred, ensuring healthier specimens adapted to captive conditions and reducing wild collection impact.
This small-sized seahorse reaches up to 15 cm in length and displays a gentle temperament, making it suitable for peaceful community tanks with compatible species. Due to their specialised feeding and care requirements, they are best kept by experienced hobbyists or under expert guidance.
Care and Husbandry
- Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and stable water parameters.
- Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 22-26°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and stable ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels.
- Diet: Hippocampus kuda are carnivorous and require frequent feeding of live or frozen mysis shrimp and other suitable small crustaceans. Feeding multiple times daily is essential due to their high metabolism.
- Compatibility: Peaceful tank mates are essential. Avoid aggressive or fast-moving fish that may outcompete or stress seahorses.
- Tank Setup: Provide plenty of hitching posts such as macroalgae, gorgonians, or artificial seahorse perches to allow natural anchoring behaviour.
Additional Information
Tank-bred Hippocampus kuda are more resilient and better adapted to aquarium life than wild-caught specimens. Their breeding in captivity supports sustainable aquarium keeping and conservation efforts.
