The Stegostoma fasciatum, commonly known as the Zebra Shark, is a striking and peaceful species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This medium to large tank-bred specimen offers a sustainable and hardy option for experienced hobbyists looking to add a unique shark to their collection.
Appearance: The Zebra Shark is easily recognised by its elongated body, distinctive pattern of dark spots on a pale background, and long tail fin. Juveniles display zebra-like stripes which fade into spots as they mature.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and non-aggressive, Zebra Sharks are best kept with similarly sized or larger tank mates. Avoid housing with small, timid fish that may be stressed or seen as prey. They are bottom dwellers and spend much of their time resting on the substrate.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, they thrive on a varied diet of meaty foods including shrimp, squid, mussels, and specialised shark pellets. Feeding should be done 3-4 times per week to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to their potential size and active nature, a minimum tank size of 500 litres is recommended for medium to large individuals. Provide a spacious aquarium with a sandy substrate to allow natural resting behaviour and ample swimming space.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to support their health.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, Zebra Sharks may disturb invertebrates or small fish and are best kept in fish-only or mixed non-reef setups.
Origin: Tank-bred specimens sourced responsibly to reduce wild collection impact.
