Discosoma spp. (Striped) are popular soft corals known for their distinctive striped patterns and mushroom-like appearance. These large specimens add dynamic colour and texture to reef aquariums, making them a favourite among marine hobbyists.
Care Level: Easy to moderate care requirements make Discosoma spp. suitable for a wide range of marine aquarium setups, including beginner reef tanks.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is preferred. Too intense lighting may cause bleaching, while too low lighting can reduce growth and vibrancy. LED or T5 lighting systems with adjustable intensity work well.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow is ideal. Strong currents can cause the polyps to retract and stress the coral.
Placement: Place the coral on rockwork or substrate where it has space to expand without touching neighbouring corals. Adequate spacing helps prevent aggression and damage.
Diet: Discosoma spp. primarily rely on photosynthesis via their symbiotic zooxanthellae but will benefit from occasional feeding of fine particulate foods such as phytoplankton or coral-specific liquid foods.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution; ensure sufficient space from other corals to avoid chemical warfare or physical damage.
Additional Notes: Regular water quality maintenance and stable parameters will support healthy growth. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water flow to prevent stress.
