The Balistoides conspicillum, or Clown Triggerfish, is a visually captivating marine fish known for its distinctive black body adorned with large white spots and vibrant yellow markings. This medium-sized triggerfish can grow up to approximately 50 cm (20 inches) in the wild, though specimens in captivity typically remain smaller.
Care Level: This species is best suited to advanced marine aquarists due to its size, temperament, and specific husbandry needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Clown Triggerfish is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as it matures. It is not reef safe and should be housed with robust tank mates that can tolerate its assertive behaviour. Avoid keeping with small, timid fish or invertebrates.
Diet: A carnivorous species, Balistoides conspicillum thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and high-quality frozen or live marine preparations. Regular feeding of vitamin-enriched foods is recommended to maintain health and coloration.
Tank Requirements: Due to its potential size and activity level, a minimum tank size of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is advised. Provide ample swimming space with plenty of rockwork for hiding and territory establishment.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Reef Safety: No – not suitable for reef aquariums due to predation on invertebrates and potential aggression towards corals.
