Xyrichthys splendens, commonly known as the Splendid Wrasse, is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its vibrant colours and dynamic swimming behaviour. The male exhibits particularly bright and striking patterns, making it a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts.
This species is best suited to experienced hobbyists with established tanks, as it requires stable water parameters and sufficient space to thrive. The Splendid Wrasse is a semi-aggressive species that can coexist with other robust fish but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar wrasses.
Care Recommendations:
- Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial disputes.
- Diet: Carnivorous; feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivorous fish.
- Temperament and Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; best kept with other semi-aggressive or larger peaceful species. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish.
- Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, they may occasionally disturb small invertebrates or corals.
- Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and resting. Open swimming areas are essential for natural behaviour.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Available in various sizes, allowing you to select the specimen best suited to your aquarium setup and experience level.
