Xyrichthys splendens, commonly known as the Splendid Wrasse, is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its vibrant colours and dynamic behaviour. Sold as a pair in various sizes, these wrasses make an excellent addition to larger marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. These wrasses require stable water conditions and ample swimming space.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar wrasse species. Best kept with compatible tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with pellet or flake foods formulated for marine carnivores.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) or larger to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may prey on small invertebrates and should be introduced carefully into reef systems.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Avoid overly strong currents as these fish prefer moderate swimming conditions.
Placement: Provide ample open swimming areas with sandy substrate and scattered rockwork for hiding and resting. They often bury themselves partially in sand when threatened or resting.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
When introducing a pair, ensure the tank is large enough to minimise territorial disputes. Regular water quality monitoring and stable parameters will promote health and longevity.
