Thalassoma genivittatum is a large, colourful wrasse species prized for its striking appearance and dynamic behaviour. Native to the Red Sea and adjacent waters, this species is a lively addition to suitably sized marine aquaria.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced due to its active nature and specific tank requirements.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards smaller or more passive tankmates. Best housed with similarly sized or robust species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Requires a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality pellet or flake foods formulated for carnivores.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to mimic natural reef environments and support the fish’s active swimming behaviour.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and establishing territories.
Origin: Red Sea and adjacent marine regions.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
This species is generally considered reef safe with caution, as it may prey on small invertebrates and fish. Careful selection of tankmates is advised.
Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential to maintain health and vibrancy. Due to their active nature, ensure the aquarium is well-covered to prevent jumping.
