Acanthurus fowleri, commonly known as Fowler’s Surgeonfish, is a large and visually striking tang species prized by experienced marine aquarium enthusiasts. This XXL specimen requires a spacious tank and stable water conditions to ensure optimal health and longevity.
Temperament and Compatibility: Fowler’s Surgeonfish is generally semi-aggressive and territorial, especially towards conspecifics and similar tang species. It is best housed singly or in a very large aquarium with ample swimming space and hiding spots. Compatibility with other robust fish species is possible, but care should be taken when introducing new tankmates.
Diet: This species is primarily herbivorous, thriving on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplementing with high-quality vegetable-based flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods will promote vibrant colouration and health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and active nature, a minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended, with plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Stable water parameters and excellent filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
Reef Compatibility: Acanthurus fowleri is considered With Caution in reef tanks, as it may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates. Monitoring behaviour closely is advised if housed in a reef environment.
Origin and Size: Native to the Western Pacific, this species can reach a maximum size of approximately 40 cm in captivity.
