The female Gomphosus varius, commonly known as the Birdnose Wrasse, is a striking addition to any marine aquarium. This small-sized wrasse is known for its elongated snout and vibrant colouration, which adds dynamic movement and interest to reef or fish-only setups.
Care Level: Moderate. Gomphosus varius requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped wrasses. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets. Supplement with live or frozen meaty foods to encourage natural foraging behaviour.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territories. A mature aquarium with plenty of live rock is essential to offer hiding places and grazing opportunities.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with caution. Generally reef safe but may nip at small invertebrates or sessile animals. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches).
Regular water changes and stable water chemistry are important for maintaining health. Avoid aggressive tank mates and provide a secure lid as wrasses are known jumpers.
