Cheilinus oxycephalus is a captivating wrasse species known for its vibrant colours and active behaviour. As a small-sized wrasse, it is best suited to marine aquariums with a minimum volume that accommodates its swimming needs and territorial nature.
Care Level: This species requires an intermediate to advanced level of care due to its specific dietary and environmental needs.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive, Cheilinus oxycephalus can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar species. It is recommended to keep only one individual per tank or ensure ample space and hiding places if housed with other wrasses.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, this wrasse thrives on a varied diet consisting of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivorous fish.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial aggression. The aquarium should include live rock for natural hiding spots and to encourage natural foraging behaviour.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 specific gravity, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow to simulate natural reef environments.
Compatibility: Suitable tank mates include other semi-aggressive or peaceful marine fish that are not small enough to be considered prey. Avoid housing with very small or highly passive species.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, this wrasse may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimps or small crabs, so caution is advised when keeping invertebrate-rich reef tanks.
