The Bodianus axillaris, also known as the Axilspot Hogfish, is a visually stunning wrasse species native to the Indo-Pacific region. This medium-sized fish is characterised by its vibrant colouration, including a distinctive dark spot near the pectoral fin, and a sleek, elongated body.
In the aquarium, Bodianus axillaris is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its specific care requirements. It thrives in well-established marine tanks of at least 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) that provide ample live rock for hiding and foraging. This species is semi-aggressive and can be territorial, so compatibility with other tank inhabitants should be considered carefully.
Dietarily, the Axilspot Hogfish is carnivorous and benefits from a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Regular feeding supports vibrant colouration and overall health.
Water parameters should be stable, with temperatures maintained between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 specific gravity, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Moderate water flow and good filtration are essential to replicate its natural reef environment.
Due to its semi-aggressive temperament, it is recommended to house Bodianus axillaris with similarly sized or larger fish and avoid smaller, timid species. This wrasse is generally reef safe but may prey on small invertebrates, so caution is advised in reef setups.
