The Yellow Basslet (Assessor flavissimus) is a strikingly vibrant marine fish known for its bright yellow body and peaceful temperament. Native to the western Pacific Ocean, this species is a popular choice for reef aquarium enthusiasts due to its manageable size and compatibility with a variety of tank mates.
Care Level: Easy to moderate. This species adapts well to captive conditions when provided with stable water parameters and a suitable environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Yellow Basslet is generally peaceful and non-aggressive, making it suitable for community reef tanks. It coexists well with other peaceful fish species but may become territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped basslets if the tank is too small.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, supplemented with quality marine flake or pellet foods.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef conditions is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with caves and crevices for shelter and hiding spots. This helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviour.
Origin: Western Pacific Ocean.
Maximum Size: Approximately 7 cm (2.8 inches) in length.
Reef Safety: Yes, suitable for reef aquariums as it does not harm corals or invertebrates.
