Hemitaurichthys polylepis, commonly known as the Pyramid Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning addition to medium and large marine aquariums. This species is characterised by its distinctive triangular white patches set against a deep blue body, making it a striking focal point in any reef tank.
In the wild, Hemitaurichthys polylepis is a schooling species that thrives in open water environments, feeding primarily on plankton. In captivity, it is best kept in groups to replicate natural social behaviour and reduce stress. This peaceful butterflyfish coexists well with other non-aggressive tank mates and is considered reef safe, posing minimal threat to corals and invertebrates.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Diet: Primarily planktonic feeders; offer a varied diet including high-quality frozen plankton, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised marine fish flakes or pellets to ensure nutritional balance.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space. Maintain moderate water flow and lighting suitable for reef environments. Placement should allow open swimming areas with some shelter from live rock formations.
Compatibility: Peaceful temperament makes it suitable for community reef tanks. Avoid aggressive or overly territorial species.
Regular water changes and monitoring of water quality are essential to maintain optimal health. This species benefits from a mature aquarium with stable parameters.
