Overview: The Chaetodon ulietensis, or Pacific Double-Saddle Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its bold yellow body with distinctive black saddle-like markings. This small-sized butterflyfish is best suited for experienced marine hobbyists due to its specialised care requirements.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar butterflyfish species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a community tank with non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or fin-nipping species.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement diet with high-quality marine flakes or pellets formulated for butterflyfish. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territories. A mature, well-established reef or marine aquarium with live rock for grazing and hiding places is essential.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are critical for this sensitive species.
Reef Compatibility: Chaetodon ulietensis is considered With Caution in reef tanks as it may nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates. Suitable for fish-only or fish-plus-live-rock systems where coral safety is not a priority.
Additional Notes: This species is wild-caught; therefore, acclimation should be done carefully to reduce stress. Monitor closely for signs of disease or malnutrition in early weeks.
