Chaetodon trifasciatus, commonly called the Melon Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its distinctive three-banded pattern and vibrant colours. This small butterflyfish reaches a modest size, making it suitable for larger, mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a tank with non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or fin-nipping species.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow replicate their natural reef environment.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. This encourages natural behaviour and reduces stress.
Origin: Native to the western Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea and East African coast.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 15 cm (6 inches).
Reef Safety: With caution. May nip at coral polyps and clam mantles, so reef compatibility depends on individual behaviour and tank setup.
