Chaetodon semilarvatus, commonly called the Yellow Butterflyfish, is a spectacular species prized for its bright yellow body and elegant black markings. This extra large specimen is suitable for advanced marine aquarium enthusiasts with spacious tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in large tanks. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish but avoid housing with overly aggressive species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including marine-based meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) or larger to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, so not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure stable water parameters with regular maintenance.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium where it can swim freely and display natural behaviours.
Origin: Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
Providing a well-balanced diet and a spacious, stable environment will help maintain the health and vibrancy of this stunning butterflyfish.
