Overview: The Reef Butterflyfish (Chaetodon sedentarius) is a captivating species native to the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea. Recognisable by its distinctive yellow and white body with black markings, this small butterflyfish adds vibrant colour and activity to a marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably sized tank. Compatible with other peaceful fish but caution is advised with very small or slow-moving species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared foods formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territories. Well-aquascaped with live rock to offer grazing surfaces and hiding spots.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and invertebrates, so not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
