Chaetodon lunulatus, commonly known as the Crescent Butterflyfish, is a medium-sized marine fish prized for its elegant crescent-shaped markings and vibrant colours. This species is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care requirements.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Crescent Butterflyfish require stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar butterflyfish species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably sized tank. Compatible with other peaceful community fish but avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement diet with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow is preferred to simulate natural reef conditions without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places. This species appreciates a well-established reef environment with ample coral cover but may nip at some coral polyps, so caution is advised in reef tanks.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Additional Notes: Crescent Butterflyfish can be sensitive to water quality changes and require a stable, mature aquarium. Regular monitoring and maintenance are essential for their health and longevity.
