Chaetodon capistratus, commonly known as the Fourspot Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its unique pattern featuring a prominent black spot on each side. This small butterflyfish reaches a maximum size of approximately 15 cm (6 inches) and is best suited for experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. It is compatible with other non-aggressive fish but should not be housed with overly aggressive tankmates. Avoid keeping multiple Fourspot Butterflyfish together unless the aquarium is very large.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should be mature with plenty of live rock to encourage natural grazing and hiding spots.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Lighting should be moderate to support the growth of natural algae on live rock.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, Fourspot Butterflyfish may nip at coral polyps or clam mantles, so monitor closely if kept in reef systems.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
