The Paracanthurus hepatus Yellow Belly is a captivating tang species prized for its vibrant blue body contrasted by a distinctive yellow belly. This extra large specimen is a stunning addition to any mature marine aquarium, offering dynamic movement and striking colouration.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and ample swimming space.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. Suitable tank mates include other robust fish, but care should be taken when housing with similarly shaped tangs to avoid territorial disputes.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet consisting of marine algae, spirulina, high-quality flakes or pellets, and occasional meaty foods such as mysis shrimp to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) or larger to accommodate its active swimming needs and territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, this tang may nip at coral polyps or clam mantles, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard moderate lighting and moderate water flow are recommended to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of open swimming space along with rockwork for hiding and grazing. Introduce this fish last to reduce territorial aggression.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Regular water changes and maintaining pristine water quality are essential for the health of this species. Due to its size and temperament, the Yellow Belly Tang is best suited for experienced marine aquarists with established tanks.
