The Acanthurus nigricans, commonly known as the Whitecheek Surgeonfish, is a visually stunning tang species prized for its vibrant blue body contrasted with distinctive white cheek patches. This extra large specimen is ideal for experienced marine aquarists seeking a bold centerpiece fish.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its size and specific dietary needs.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive; territorial especially towards conspecifics and similar tang species. Best housed singly or in a very large aquarium with ample swimming space.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Supplement with occasional meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and territorial nature.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or corals, especially if underfed.
