The Acanthurus nigricans, or Powder Blue Tang, is a visually stunning addition to any marine aquarium. This medium-sized tang is renowned for its bright blue body, yellow dorsal fin, and distinctive black face mask, making it a favourite among marine fish enthusiasts.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and ample swimming space.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality herbivore flakes and pellets. Occasional meaty treats can be offered.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and territorial nature.
Compatibility: Best kept with other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with similarly shaped tangs to reduce territorial disputes.
Reef Safe: With Caution. May nip at some sessile invertebrates or corals, so monitor closely in reef setups.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and specific gravity 1.020-1.025.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Providing plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots will help reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour. Regular water changes and high water quality are essential for long-term health.
