Limulus polyphemus, commonly known as the horseshoe crab, is a distinctive marine invertebrate prized by enthusiasts for its ancient lineage and unique morphology. This large specimen is suitable for experienced hobbyists with the capacity to provide appropriate husbandry.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to specific environmental and dietary needs.
Diet: Limulus polyphemus is a scavenger and detritivore, feeding primarily on molluscs, worms, and other small benthic invertebrates. In captivity, a varied diet including fresh or frozen marine worms, mollusc meat, and specialised invertebrate pellets is advised.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful, but due to its size and behaviour, it should be housed with non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with small or delicate invertebrates that may be disturbed or preyed upon.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically harmful to corals, their movement and foraging behaviour can disturb delicate reef structures.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample space for movement and foraging. A sandy or fine substrate is essential to mimic natural habitat and allow burrowing behaviour.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 20-25°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow to replicate coastal environments.
Lighting: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting requirements.
Placement: Provide open sandy areas with some shelter such as rocks or marine décor to allow natural behaviour and protection.
Origin: Native to the western Atlantic coast, from the Gulf of Maine to the Yucatán Peninsula.
Maximum Size: Up to 60 cm (24 inches) in length.
