Comatula spp. (Black-Yellow) are striking featherstars known for their delicate, feathery arms in contrasting black and yellow hues. These invertebrates belong to the Crinoidea class and are prized for their graceful movement and filter-feeding behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate. Featherstars require stable, mature aquarium conditions with consistent water parameters.
Feeding: Comatula spp. are suspension feeders that capture plankton and detritus from the water column. Supplement their diet with finely powdered marine foods such as phytoplankton, zooplankton, or specialised invertebrate feeds several times per week.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: These featherstars are generally reef safe and peaceful, making them suitable for reef aquariums. Avoid housing them with aggressive or predatory fish and invertebrates that may harm their delicate arms.
Water Flow and Placement: Provide moderate, indirect water flow to facilitate feeding without causing stress. Position them on stable rockwork or substrate where they can anchor securely and extend their arms freely.
Lighting: Standard aquarium lighting is sufficient as they do not rely on photosynthesis.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to ensure stable water quality and adequate space.
Additional Notes: Featherstars are sensitive to sudden changes in water chemistry and require well-established tanks. Regular monitoring of water parameters and gentle acclimation are essential for their health.
