The Fluted Giant Clam (Tridacna squamosa) is a captivating addition to any marine aquarium, prized for its striking fluted shell and vibrant mantle colours. At approximately 7cm, this clam is suitable for experienced hobbyists with established reef tanks.
Care Requirements: This species thrives under moderate to high lighting, as it relies on symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within its tissues for nutrition. Ensure stable water parameters with a temperature range of 24-28°C, salinity between 1.023-1.025 SG, and calcium levels maintained around 400-450 ppm to support shell growth.
Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Tridacna squamosa benefits from occasional supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions.
Placement and Compatibility: Position the clam on a stable, well-lit substrate or rockwork where it can receive direct light without risk of being overshadowed. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish species that may nip at its mantle. This clam is reef safe and generally peaceful, making it compatible with most reef inhabitants.
Additional Notes: Due to its sensitivity to water quality fluctuations, regular monitoring and maintenance are essential. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water chemistry to prevent stress or bleaching.
