The Tridacna maxima, commonly known as the Maxima clam, is a popular choice for marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its vibrant pink-purple mantle and manageable size. This specimen measures approximately 6cm and is suitable for experienced hobbyists with established reef systems.
Care Level: Moderate care is required to maintain optimal health. These clams rely heavily on strong lighting to support their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of their nutrition.
Feeding: While Tridacna maxima primarily obtain nutrients through photosynthesis, supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote growth and vitality.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the clam’s mantle.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to provide stable water parameters and adequate space. Strong, stable lighting such as T5, LED, or metal halide is essential, along with moderate water flow to prevent sediment accumulation without stressing the clam.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy substrate or rockwork where it can receive direct light. Ensure it is securely placed to prevent dislodgement by tank inhabitants or water movement.
Regular water quality monitoring and maintenance are crucial to prevent nitrate and phosphate build-up, which can negatively impact clam health.
