The Tridacna maxima (Pink-Purple) is a captivating small giant clam species prized for its vibrant pink to purple mantle colours. At approximately 10cm, this clam is a striking addition to mature reef aquariums, offering both beauty and ecological benefits.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and strong lighting to thrive.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, Tridacna maxima hosts symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within its tissues, which provide most of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth and health.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting is essential to support the clam’s symbiotic algae. LED, T5, or metal halide lighting systems are recommended.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure nutrient exchange without causing stress or damage to the clam’s delicate mantle.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, hard substrate such as live rock or specialised clam plugs in the lower to middle sections of the aquarium where it can receive ample light and moderate flow. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at the mantle.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe with caution. Generally compatible with peaceful reef inhabitants but avoid housing with species known to harass clams.
Tank Size: A minimum of 100 litres is recommended to maintain stable water conditions and provide adequate space.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15cm in captivity, though growth rates vary.
Regular monitoring of water parameters such as calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, and temperature is crucial for optimal health. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water chemistry to prevent stress.
