The Blue Maxima Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a visually striking giant clam species prized for its brilliant blue mantle and intricate patterns. This Ultra Pacific variant, approximately 13cm in size, is a captivating addition to mature reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate care is required to maintain optimal health. Stable water parameters and strong lighting are essential for photosynthesis and growth.
Feeding: While Tridacna maxima primarily relies on symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within its tissues for nutrition, supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support its health, especially in lower light conditions.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting such as metal halide, T5, or strong LED systems is necessary to support photosynthesis. Position the clam in well-lit areas of the tank.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to ensure adequate gas exchange without causing stress or damage to the clam’s delicate mantle.
Placement: Place the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate where it can securely attach itself. Avoid areas with strong direct currents or aggressive tank mates.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: This species is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at the clam.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and stable water conditions.
Regular monitoring of water parameters, including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is important to support shell growth and overall clam health.
