The Blue Tridacna maxima (Ultra) clam is a captivating addition to any mature marine aquarium. Originating from the Pacific, this clam reaches around 3cm in size and is prized for its vivid blue mantle and intricate patterns.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and consistent lighting to thrive.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate to high lighting is essential to support the clam’s symbiotic zooxanthellae, which provide much of its nutrition through photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is recommended to ensure adequate gas exchange and to prevent detritus accumulation around the clam.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate where it can attach securely. Avoid placing it near aggressive corals or in areas with strong direct current.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic, but benefit from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialized clam foods, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe and compatible with most peaceful tank inhabitants. Avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at the clam’s mantle.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters with calcium levels around 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm to support shell growth.
