The Black Tiger Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a visually stunning giant clam species prized in the marine aquarium hobby for its intricate mantle patterns and vibrant colours. At approximately 9cm, this clam is suitable for established reef tanks with stable water parameters.
Care Requirements: This clam requires strong, high-quality lighting such as metal halide or high-output LED systems to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae. Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure nutrient exchange without causing mantle damage.
Feeding is generally minimal as the clam derives most nutrition from photosynthesis; however, occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote growth and vitality.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: The Black Tiger Clam is reef safe and peaceful, making it compatible with most reef inhabitants. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at its mantle.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate area with ample light exposure. Ensure it is not shaded by corals or rockwork.
Regular monitoring of water parameters, especially calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is essential to support shell growth and overall health.
