The Black Tiger Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a popular choice among marine aquarists seeking a visually striking and relatively small giant clam species. At approximately 3cm, this clam displays distinctive black and white striped mantle patterns that add dynamic contrast to reef tanks.
Care Requirements: This species thrives under moderate to strong lighting, ideally from LED or T5 fixtures that support photosynthetic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) within its tissues. Stable water parameters are essential, with a temperature range of 24-28°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and calcium levels maintained between 400-450 ppm.
Water flow should be moderate to low to prevent mantle damage while ensuring adequate nutrient exchange. Placement should be on a stable, flat rock or sandy substrate where the clam can securely attach and fully expand its mantle.
Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, the Black Tiger Clam benefits from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions or during acclimation.
Compatibility: This clam is generally reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with large predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle.
Due to its sensitivity to water quality fluctuations, it is recommended for intermediate to advanced hobbyists with established reef systems.
