Dascyllus trimaculatus, known as the Three-Spot Damselfish, is a vibrant and active species popular among marine aquarium enthusiasts. Recognisable by its distinctive three black spots on a white body, this damselfish adds striking contrast and movement to reef or fish-only tanks.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is known for its territorial and sometimes aggressive behaviour, especially in smaller tanks or when kept singly. It is best housed with other semi-aggressive or robust tank mates. Avoid pairing with very peaceful or slow-moving species to reduce stress and potential conflicts.
Diet: Omnivorous by nature, Dascyllus trimaculatus thrives on a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily supports optimal health and vibrant colouration.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and reduce territorial aggression. Provide plenty of live rock for shelter and territory establishment. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters typical of reef aquariums are ideal.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, this species may nip at small invertebrates or corals, especially if underfed or stressed. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in managing territorial marine fish.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 10 cm (4 inches).
