Synanceia horrida, commonly known as the Stonefish, is one of the most venomous fish species found in marine environments. This scorpionfish is renowned for its exceptional camouflage and ambush predation tactics. Due to its venomous spines and specialised care requirements, it is recommended only for advanced aquarists with experience in handling potentially dangerous marine species.
Care Level: Advanced. Stonefish require stable water parameters and a secure tank setup to prevent accidental injury to both the fish and the aquarist.
Temperament and Compatibility: Synanceia horrida is generally solitary and territorial. It is a slow-moving ambush predator that can coexist with larger, non-aggressive tank mates but may prey on smaller fish and invertebrates. Careful selection of tank companions is essential.
Diet: Carnivorous. In the aquarium, they should be fed a diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and other protein-rich marine fare. Feeding should be done cautiously to avoid injury.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 US gallons) is recommended to provide adequate space and maintain water quality.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is suitable, mimicking their natural shaded reef habitats. Water flow should be moderate to low to replicate calm reef environments.
Placement: Provide ample hiding places with live rock and sandy substrate to allow natural camouflage and ambush behaviour. Ensure the tank is secure and well-covered to prevent accidental contact.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 38 cm (15 inches) in length.
Important Note: Due to their venomous spines, handle with extreme caution. Use appropriate tools and protective equipment when maintaining the aquarium.
