Parapterois heterura is a captivating scorpionfish species prized for its distinctive fin morphology and striking patterns. This medium-sized specimen is suitable for marine aquarium enthusiasts with experience in keeping predatory fish.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is generally solitary and can be territorial. It is best housed with similarly sized or larger peaceful tank mates to avoid aggression. Avoid keeping with small fish or invertebrates that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Parapterois heterura is carnivorous, feeding primarily on small fish and crustaceans. In captivity, offer a varied diet of live or frozen meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water conditions. The aquarium should have a sandy or fine substrate with plenty of rockwork for hiding and ambush hunting.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperatures between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Lighting should be moderate, replicating natural reef environments without excessive brightness.
Additional Notes: Exercise caution when handling this species as it possesses venomous spines typical of scorpionfish. Suitable only for advanced hobbyists familiar with venomous marine species.
