The Zebrasoma scopas, or Scopas Tang, is a striking addition to any large marine aquarium. Recognisable by its brownish body and vibrant yellow tail, this tang is a peaceful yet active herbivore that helps control algae growth in reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards other tangs, especially conspecifics or similar-shaped species.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Feed a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Supplement with occasional meaty foods.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with caution. Generally reef safe but may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or coral polyps if underfed.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural habitat conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Avoid overcrowding with other tangs to minimise aggression.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
With proper care, the Scopas Tang is a rewarding species that adds both beauty and ecological balance to large marine aquariums.
