Zebrasoma desjardinii, commonly referred to as the Sailfin Tang, is a visually stunning addition to any marine aquarium. This medium-sized tang is renowned for its bold vertical stripes and large, sail-like dorsal fin, making it a favourite among marine fish enthusiasts in the UK.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample space.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or soft corals.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets, and supplemented with high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 US gallons) to allow sufficient swimming space and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong water movement mimics natural reef environments and supports health.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, with plenty of open swimming space and hiding spots among live rock.
Origin: Western Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea and East African coast.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
For best results, maintain stable water parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, and regular water changes. Avoid housing with aggressive tank mates and provide a varied diet to ensure vibrant colouration and health.
