Tubastrea faulkneri, commonly known as the Orange Sun Coral, is a stunning large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its bright orange polyps and unique appearance. This species belongs to the family Dendrophylliidae and is a non-photosynthetic coral, meaning it requires supplemental feeding to thrive in a marine aquarium.
Lighting: As a non-photosynthetic coral, Tubastrea faulkneri does not rely on strong lighting and can be kept under low to moderate light conditions. Avoid intense lighting to prevent stress.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure proper nutrient delivery and waste removal without damaging the delicate polyps.
Placement: Position this coral in shaded or dimly lit areas of the tank, such as under rock overhangs or in caves. Provide ample space around it to prevent aggression and allow full polyp extension.
Feeding: Tubastrea faulkneri requires regular feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Target feeding 2-3 times per week is recommended to maintain health and vibrant colouration.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This coral is generally reef safe but should be given adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to avoid stinging or overgrowth. It is suitable for mature reef tanks with stable water parameters.
Care Level: Moderate care level, recommended for aquarists with some experience in keeping LPS corals and providing supplemental feeding.
