The Tridacna maxima (Pink-Purple) is a captivating giant clam species prized for its vibrant pink and purple mantle colours. At approximately 12cm, this clam is a striking addition to mature reef aquariums, offering both aesthetic appeal and ecological benefits.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and adequate lighting to thrive.
Feeding and Nutrition: Tridacna maxima primarily relies on photosynthetic symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues, so strong lighting is essential. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can enhance growth and health.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This clam is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at its mantle.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to provide stable water conditions and space. Moderate to strong water flow is ideal to prevent detritus accumulation around the clam.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, hard substrate such as rock or specialised coral plugs in well-lit areas of the aquarium. Avoid direct exposure to intense flow that may cause mantle retraction.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, and low nutrient levels.
With proper care, this 12cm pink-purple Tridacna maxima can become a long-lived and visually stunning centrepiece in your marine aquarium.
