Tridacna derasa, or the Derasa Clam, is a prized invertebrate for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a visually striking and relatively large clam species. At approximately 11cm, this clam displays a smooth, elongated shell with vibrant mantle colours that can enhance the aesthetic of a reef tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae.
Lighting Requirements: Strong lighting is essential, ideally provided by high-output LED or metal halide systems to mimic natural sunlight and promote photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement is preferred to ensure adequate nutrient exchange without causing stress to the clam.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate where it can attach securely. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at its mantle.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic algae, but may benefit from occasional supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or marine invertebrate foods.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may harm the clam.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient space and stable water conditions.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 30cm in captivity under optimal conditions.
Regular monitoring of water parameters such as calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium is important to support shell growth. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water chemistry to prevent stress.
