The Tridacna Crocea clam, often referred to as the boring clam, is a popular choice among marine aquarists due to its striking mantle patterns and relatively small size. This Grade A specimen, approximately 7cm in size, is perfect for reef tanks where space is limited but visual impact is desired.
Care Level: Moderate care is recommended. This clam requires stable water parameters and moderate to strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic, deriving nutrition from light via symbiotic algae, but benefits from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate to high lighting, ideally from LED or T5 fixtures, to support photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is preferred to ensure adequate nutrient exchange without causing stress.
Placement: Position on a stable rock or substrate where it can securely embed itself. Avoid areas with excessive sediment or strong currents.
Tank Size: Suitable for tanks of 100 litres or more to maintain stable water quality and adequate space.
Regular monitoring of water parameters such as calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium is essential to support healthy shell growth. This clam is a stunning and rewarding addition to a mature reef aquarium when cared for properly.
